The airport was originally named Broome County Airport and that name remained through the 1970s. The name Greater Binghamton Airport was chosen in 2003 to match the area's new marketing campaign under a unified name.

It is about 15 miles south west of New York City.
The airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the three other major airports in metro New York, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport and Teterboro Airport (as well as the Downtown Manhattan Heliport).

It is a popular destination for aircraft travelling to New York City and Long Island. Although mainly a general aviation airport, it is designated as a reliever airport according to Federal Aviation Administration records. It is the third busiest airport in New York in terms of aircraft movements behind only John F. Kennedy (KJFK) and LaGuardia (KLGA). Occupying 526 acres, Republic Airport is one of eleven airports on Long Island.

Its IATA Airport Code is derived from its location in White Plains, although by some accounts the code is taken from the neighboring communities of Harrison, Purchase, and North Castle. The airport is owned by Westchester County.

It is owned and operated by the Town of Islip, therefore some people call it "Islip Airport". It is the only airport in Suffolk County with scheduled service on major airlines and serves over two million passengers a year.

It is named after a former Mayor of New York, Fiorello LaGuardia. "LaGuardia Airport" is the official name of the airport according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the facility.
